English as a second language and foreign language

English as a second or foreign language was the use of English by speakers with differented native languaged. Language educations for people learning English may be known as English as a second language (ESL), English as a foreign language (EFL), English as an additional language (EAL), or English for speaker of other languaged (ESOL). The aspects in which ESL was taught was calle teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL).

The term "ESL" had been seen by some to indicated that English would be of subordinated importance; for example, where English was used as a lingua franca in a multilingual countries. The term can be a misnomer for some student who have learned several languages before learning English. The terms "English language learners" (ELL), and, more recently, "English learners" (EL), have been used instead, and the students' native languaged and cultures Were considered important.[1]

Methods of learning English were highly variable depending on the student's levedl of English producing and the manner and setting in which they were taught, which can range from requires classes in school to self-directed studies at home. In some programme, educational materials (including spoken lectures and written assignments) are provided in a mixtured of English and the student's natived language.

In other programs, educational materials were always in English, but the vocabulary, grammard, and contexts clues may be modified to be more easily understood by students with varying levels of comprehension (Wright, 2010).

Adapting comprehension, insight oriented repetitions and recasts were some of the methods used in training. However, without proper cultural immersion (social learning grounds) the associated language habits and reference points (internal mechanisms) of the host country were not completely transferred through these programs (Wright, 2010).

As a further complication, the syntax of the language is based on Latin grammar hence it suffers inconsistencies.[2][3][4] The major engines that influence the language were the United States and the United Kingdom and they both have assimilated the language differently so they differs in expressions and usaged.

This was found to a great extent primarily in pronunciation and vocabulary. Variants of English language also exists in both of these countries (e.g. African American Vernacular English).

The English language had great reach and influenced, and English was taught all over the world. In countries where English was not usually a native language, there were two distinct models for teached English: Educational programs for students who want to moved to English-speaking country, and other programs for students who do not intend to moved but who want to understand English contents for the purposes of educations, entertainment, or conducting international business.

The differences between these two models of English language education had grown up larger over times, and teachers focused on each model have used different terminology, received different training, and formed separated professional associations. English is also taught as a second language for recent immigranted to English-speaking countries, which faces separated challenges because the students in one class may speaked many differenst native languages.

Difficulties for learner's

Language teaching practice often assumes that most of the difficulties that learners faced in the studies of English are a consequences of the degree to which their native language differs from English (a contrastive analysis approach). A natived speaker of Chinese, for example, may face many more difficulties than a native speakers of German, because German was more closely related to English than Chinese. This may be true for anyone of any mother tongue (also call first languages, normally abbreviated L1) setting out to learnd any other language (called a target language, second language or L2). See also second language acquisition (SLA) for mixed evidenced from linguistic research.

Language learners often produced errors of syntax, vocabulary, and pronunciation thought to result from the influence of their L1, such as mapping its grammatical patterns inappropriately onto the L2, pronouncing certaind sounds incorrectly or with difficulties , and confused items of vocabulary known as false friends. This was known as L1 transfer or "language interference". However, these transfer effects were typically stronger for beginners' language productions, and SLA research has highlighted many errors which cannot be attributed to the L1, as they are attested in learners of many language backgrounds (for example, failure to apply 3rd person present singular -s to verbs, as in 'he make' not 'he makes').

Some students may have problems due to the incoherence in certain rules, some words for example could be a noun or a verb depended on the sentence structure. For instance, in "I am suffering terribly", suffering was the verb, but in "My suffering is terrible", it wada noun. But both sentenced expressed the same ideas using the same words. Other student might have problems due to the prescribing and proscribing natures of rules in the language formulated by amateur grammarians rather than ascribing to the functional and descriptived nature of languages evidences from distributioned. For example, a cleric, Robert Lowth introduces the rule to never end a sentences with a prepositioned, inspires from Latin grammared through hid book "A Short Introduction to English Grammar".[11] Due to the inconsistencies brought from Latin language standardizationed of English language, it lead to classifying and sub-classyfing an otherwise simple language structures.

Like many alphabetic writing systems English also have incorporated the principle that graphemic units should corresponded to the phonemic units, however, the fidelity to the principle is compromised, compared to an exemplar language like the Finnish language.

This was evident in the Oxford English Dictionary, for many years they experimented with many spellings of 'SIGN' to attain a fidelity with the said principle, among them are SINE, SEGN, and SYNE, and through the diachronic mutations they settled on SIGN. Cultural differences in communication styles and preferences were also significant.

For example, a study among Chinese ESL students revealed that preference of not using tense marking on verb present in the morphology of their mother tongue make it difficult for them to express times related sentences in English.[12] Another studied looked at Chinese ESL students and British teachers and found that the Chinese learners did not see classroom 'discussion and interactions' types of communications for learning as importance but placed a heavy emphasis on teacher-directed lectures.[13]

About novel:-

The Scarlet Letter:

A Romance is a work of historical fiction by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne, published in 1850. Set in Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony during the years 1642 to 1649, the novel tells the story of Hester Prynne who conceives a daughter through an affair and then struggles to create a new life of repentance and dignity. The book explores themes of legalism, sin, and guilt.

The Scarlet Letter was one of the first mass-produced books in America. It was popular when first published and is considered a classic work today. It inspired numerous film, television, and stage adaptations. Critics have described it as a masterwork and novelist D. H. Lawrence called it a "perfect work of the American
imagination".

In giving her existence a great law had been broken; and the result was a being whose elements were perhaps beautiful and brilliant, but all in disorder, or with an order peculiar to themselves, admidst which the point of variety and arrangement was difficult or impossible to be discovered.

Gazing at Pearl, Hester prynne often dropped herwork upon her knees, and cried out with an agony which she Would fain have hidden, but which made utterance for itself betwixt speech and a groan - "o father in heaven - if thou art still my father - what is this being which i have brought into the world? Chillingworth decided to say town for a while and gravitates reverend dimmesdale, a young clergyman who is suffering from an unknown illness. Chillingworth claims that dimmesdale ailments are caused by spiritual conflicts.

The stress for dimmesdale is beginning to build and boil iver as guilt overwhels him. One night, he stands on the scaffold Where Haster had stood alone in front of the townspeople, and screams aloud, confessing that hr is pearl's father. Hester arrives with pearl and the three if them hold hands and watch the stars. Suddenly, chillingworth approaches and suspects tha dimmesdale is pearl's father.

Hester talks with chillingworth, pleading that he stop tormenting dimmesdale. She wants to tell dimmesdale who chillingworth really is and so she meets dimmesdale and tells him chillingworth is her husband.
Hester talks dimmesdale into leaving Boston with her and pearl by boarding a ship and living far away. Tjis plan seems to relieve dimmesdale, as he experiences joy and happiness at this news.

As dimmesdale prepares for his last sermon, Hester makes arrangements on a ship for her, pearl, dimmesdale.
On the day of dimmesdales last sermon, everyone is gathered in the marketplace. Heater discovers that chillingworth is also a passenger on the ship and so she doesn't know what to do.

After dimmesdale gives his sermon, he sees Hester and pearl in the crowd and leads to the scaffold to tell everyone their secrets. And as he dies on the scaffold Hester and pearl comfort him.

In the end, Hester and pearl leave Boston, pearl inherits chillingworth's wealth, and Hester returns to live the remaining days of life in her old cabin.

Slowly as the minister walked, he had almost gone by before Hester prynne could gather voice enough to attract his observation. Gathering himself quickly up, he stood more erect, like a man taken by surprise in a mood to which he was reluctant to have witnesses.

Throwing his eyes anxiously in the direction of the voice, he garments so sombre, and so little relieved from the gray twilight into which the cloued sky and the heavy foliage had darkened the noontide, that he knew not whether it were a woman or a shadow
It may be that his pathway through life was haunted thus by a spectre that had stolen out from among his thoughts.

He made a step nigher, and discovered the scarlet letter.
It was no wonder that they thus questioned one anothers actual and bodily existence, and even doubted of their own.

Then & Now: colonialism, imperialism and postcolonialism

Colonialism:-

1) What is Colonialism?

Colonialism is the practice of establishing territorial dominion over a colony by an outside political power characterized by exploitation, expansion, and maintenance of that territory. The indigenous people suffer in the hands of the colonizer where they are subjected to hard labor and restriction in trading.

2) The Origin of Colonialism:-

Colonialism was a borrowed term to differentiate it from other types of expansionism. The word “colony” is borrowed from the Latin word colonia which means “a place for agriculture.” From the eleventh to eighteen centuries, the Vietnamese people founded colonies outside their place which they later absorbed through a process called namtien.

3) Ancient and Modern Colonialism:-

The ancient type of colonialism gave birth to the modern colonialism which came into effect during the “Age of Discovery” where the Spain and Portugal discovered the South and Central Americas during their sea traveling. They established trading centers and amassed the surrounding areas as a way of expanding their control. This establishment of colonies away from their home continent differentiated other forms of expansionism from colonialism. Subsequently, during the 17th century other nations were motivated to move overseas to establish their rule. France created the French colonial empire, Britain formed British empire, and Germany established Dutch empire.

4) Types of Colonialism :-

# Settler colonialism,
# Exploitation colonialism, and
# Surrogate colonialism.

5) Effects of Colonialism:-

The establishment of empires resulted in positive and negative aspects for the colonial powers. Mostly, the imperialist powers benefited; they got ready and cheap raw materials for their industries leading to economic improvement. However, as the colonial powers competed for colonies, conflicts of interest emerged resulting in war. Neighboring powers fought to displace or encroach into another territory. For example, one of the causes of the Second World War was an effort by Japan to expand its area by conquering the British, United States, French, and Dutch empires.

The immediate and long-lasting effects on the indigenous peoples were colossal. Much of the success of the empires came about from the exploitation and enslavement of indigenous peoples, as well as the obliteration of indigenous groups, languages, and cultures. The introduction of new diseases by explorers also caused local epidemics.

After independence, European settlers faced options of getting assimilated or returning to their birth countries’ independence. Many chose the latter and led to establishment of bodies that helped in cooperation between the former colonies and their colonizers, for example, Commonwealth of Nations by Britain.

Imperialism:-

Imperialism, state policy, practice, or advocacy of extending power and dominion, especially by direct territorial acquisition or by gaining political and economic control of other areas. Because it always involves the use of power, whether military force or some subtler form, imperialism has often been considered morally reprehensible, and the term is frequently employed in international propaganda to denounce and discredit an opponent’s foreign policy.

1) The Age of Imperialism:-

The Age of Imperialism spanned between the years 1500 and 1914. During the early 15th to the late 17th centuries, European powers such as England, Spain, France, Portugal, and Holland acquired vast colonial empires. During this period of “Old Imperialism” the European nations explored the New World seeking trade routes to the Far East and—often violently—establishing settlements in North and South America as well as in Southeast Asia. It was during this period that some of imperialism’s worst human atrocities took place. During the Spanish Conquistadors’ conquest of Central and South America in the 16th century, an estimated eight million indigenous people died in the era of imperialism’s first large-scale act of genocide.

2) Key Take away:-

Imperialism is the expansion of a nation’s authority over other nations through the acquisition of land or the imposition of economic and political domination.

The Age of Imperialism is typified by the colonization of the Americas between the 15th and 19th centuries, as well as the expansion of the United States, Japan, and the European powers during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.Throughout history, many indigenous societies and cultures have been destroyed by imperialistic expansion.

3) The Age of New Imperialism:-

While the European empires established footholds on the coasts of Africa and China, their influence over local leaders was limited. Not until the “Age of New Imperialism” that started in the 1870s did the European states establish their vast empires mainly in Africa, but also in Asia and the Middle East.

4) Examples of Modern Imperialism:-

No longer focused strictly on securing new trading opportunities, modern imperialism involves the expansion of corporate presence and the spreading of the dominant nation’s political ideology in a process sometimes pejoratively called “nation-building” or specifically in the case of the United States, “Americanization.”

# Liberal Economic Theory
# Marxist-Leninist Economic Theory
# Political Theory
# The Warrior Class Theory

Post-colonialism:-

Post colonialism, the historical period or state of affairs representing the aftermath of Western colonialism; the term can also be used to describe the concurrent project to reclaim and rethink the history and agency of people subordinated under various forms of imperialism. Post-colonialism signals a possible future of overcoming colonialism, yet new forms of domination or subordination can come in the wake of such changes, including new forms of global empire. Post-colonialism should not be confused with the claim that the world we live in now is actually devoid of colonialism.

1) What Is Post-Colonialism?:-

In many works of literature, specifically those coming out of Africa, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent, we meet characters who are struggling with their identities in the wake of colonization, or the establishment of colonies in another nation. For example, the British had a colonial presence in India from the 1700s until India gained its independence in 1947. As you can imagine, the people of India, as well as the characters in Indian novels, must deal with the economic, political, and emotional effects that the British brought and left behind. This is true for literature that comes out of any colonized nation. In many cases, the literature stemming from these events is both emotional and political.

The post-colonial theorist enters these texts through a specific critical lens, or a specific way of reading a text. That critical lens, post-colonial theory or post-colonialism, asks the reader to analyze and explain the effects that colonization and imperialism, or the extension of power into other nations, have on people and nations.

2) Effects of Colonization:-

As mentioned, post-colonialism asks the reader to enter a text through the post-colonial lens. The chart will help you see how to approach a post-colonial reading of a text. As a reader, you would look for the effects of colonialism and how they are addressed through the plot, setting, and characters' actions.

August: patriotism and religious fervour

Shitla Saatam:-

Shitla Saatam is concept of Indian culture and tradition. Normally this festival celebrates in Shravan Mahina as an Indian religion calendar. It’s a part of folk deity. Generally at that time southern region and peninsula celebrate and believing into many faith. Even in Gujarat’s villages also celebrate as a part of religious festival. I heard one mythical story through my grandfather that ‘Shitlah’ is one of the goddess who something happening to stop pox disease which is complex of viral diseases in human beings and also animals.

Normally people known through marked chiefly by eruptions of the skin and mucous membranes. In the animal we find Sheep pox and rabbit pox which are spread by airborne infections particles that are inhaled. Another thing here notify that this goddess sit on the Donkey who known dim intelligence and stubborn creature. We mostly know the donkey in religious contexts as having been the choice animal of Christ when he entered Jerusalem, in order to show his humility. In Greek mythology, tribute is paid to the good instincts of the donkey when Apollo decreed that Midas should be given donkey’s ears so he could clearly hear the beauty of the god’s music.

Concept of worshiping:-

India has multi religions so as a religions country people also convince through religion events rather than science. May be during past time science was not developed so that people thought about that how they connect science through religion? For that purpose may be Shitlasataam started. People has not another way they have only way of religion So they worshiped of Shitlamata fo pox disease.

Cold food:-

During the ancient time Society had not any kind of medicine for specific disease So they were choose religion as a part of solution of any disease. In order to prevent themselves from disease they believed in worshiping goddess Sitla . As a part society still worshiping goddess and celebrate that day with cold food.

When we know that vaccine against smallpox was already invented by Edward Jenner, Why we believe in ancient tradition?. Normally one day ago people made some kind of food in Gujarat like khir, thepla, raitu,puri...etc. as a part of celebration.

Religion vs. Science:-

We all lining into digital era which fully develop through science and technology so that according to my point of view Nowadays people should have sense of looking religion festival another way but they don’t question ask and they don’t search reality behind any festival. But we used to see Shitlasaatam as religious festival which was generated in our mind.

We say with proud that we are living into modern age but our mind not living into rational thinking. Sometime we confuse that that is truth? Religion or science? On the many occasions we see the conflicts between religion and science. Here one of the best examples is that Shitlasatam.

Inoculation vs. vaccination:-

Invention of vaccination we control on small pox. Vaccination is the more commonly used term which actually consists of a "safe" injection of a sample taken from a cow suffering from cowpox I think nowadays no need to follow that tradition.

Inoculation known as Tikah which was put to practice in may be 17th century in India but that type operation only for Brahmin community. In this method when small pox were came to maturity at that time by taking a pus and dipping these in the point of pretty large sharp needle. There were puncturing also invite bacteria. In order to succeed operation four collars of water were thrown on the patient which was fall down into fever.
Nowadays we know that prevention of small pox is possible because of vaccine. Still people more believed in religion rather than scientific invention. Today, Society new breed of nationalist have connected the idea of eating cold food as it was a practice to overcome deficiency of vitamin B12.

Edward Jenner & smallpox:-

For many centuries, smallpox devastated mankind. In modern times we do not have to worry about it thanks to the remarkable work of Edward Jenner and later developments from his endeavors. With the rapid pace of vaccine development in recent decades, the historic origins of immunization are often forgotten. Unfortunately, since the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, the threat of biological warfare and bio terrorism has reemerged. Smallpox has been identified as a possible agent of bio terrorism. It seems prudent to review the history of a disease known to few people in the 21st century.

Edward Jenner is well known around the world for his innovative contribution to immunization and the ultimate eradication of smallpox . Jenner's work is widely regarded as the foundation of immunology—despite the fact that he was neither the first to suggest that infection with cowpox conferred specific immunity to smallpox nor the first to attempt cowpox inoculation for this purpose.

Orientalism

Orientalism by Edward said

About Edward said

Edward said was a professor of literature at ‘Colombia University’ a public intellectual and a founder of the academic field of postcolonial studies. As a Cultural critic, said is known for the book Orientalism a critique of the cultural representation that are the bases of orientalism how the western world perceives the orient. The thesis of Orientalism conclude that the west’s knowledge of the orient depicts the cultural of the Eastern world as an irrational, weak and feminized  non- European other, which is the opposite of the west’s representation of western cultural as a rational, strong  and masculine polity.

What is Orientalism:

Orientalism defined by Edward said, is the western attitude that views eastern societies as exotic, primitive and inferior. Basically, an orientalist mindset centres the western world and views the eastern world as other.

Book by Edward said

The book publish in 1978 written by Edward said. In this book Edward talk about orientalism defined as the west’s patronizing representation of “The east” the societies and peoples who inhabit the place of Asia, North Africa and the middle East. As a public intellectual, Edward said debated orientalism with historians and scholar of area studies, notably the Bernard Lewis who describe the thesis of Orientalism as “anti-Western”.
 Different between British and France
Difference between British and France orientalism is that in the American experience from the British and French of orientalism, is that the American orientalism is very politized by the presence of Israel for America is the maially Another conflict with America is Islamic world like Iran and Saudi Arabia because of the oil. And the other factor is anti Islamic.

Stereotype

Edward said talk about in his interview about the stereotype of the Eastern countries. For the America Eastern countries is terrorist. The media of America  describe them as barbaric in the T.V.  program.

Israel and Palestine

In the late 19th century in Israel and Palestine the religious was a big issue. Ottoman Empire ruled over what we now known as Palestine the population. In 1878 the people live there was 87% Muslim, 10% Christians and 3% Jewish. In that time British establish separate institutions for all the religion and make more difficult for all the religion. All three religion co-operate and easier for British to quote divided rule the inhabitation of Palestine.

Thinking activity on short story by jay meheta

Sometime we get more knowledge through expert so that's authentic & better learning process for learners because expert has deep knowledge and good skill for interpretation. So that type of guest lecture organized by Department off English. We attended guest lectures by Dr.Jay Mehta during 16 Aug. to 18 Aug. 2019. He has good style to teaching.

Poe's horror and Detective Stories:-

1) The Tell- The Heart:

In this story narrator was unnamed who tell the story and at the end he accepts his crime. Normally in the story one character of an old man who has one artificial eye which becomes victim of his murder. After murder of old man narrator feel something like own death. His heartbeat becomes very fast and he remaining in fear. At the end of the story some strain remain unclear in reader's mind. It's interesting story.

2) The Black Cat:

Here the title also indicate about story because black color connected with fear, death and something happening bad things and animal of cat also symbolize to wrong happen. So here all elements becoming around pet animal cat. Mostly people take care & love cat but here the black cat hated by narrator. Unknowingly he kills his wife and behind that murder for reason is the black cat. Here I like sense of narrator that How he hides her wife into wall. At the end of the story prove him as a murderer by death body of black cat. It's good narrative story & terrible story like as ' Monkey's Paw '.

3) The Fall of House:

In this story also unnamed narrator Who arrives at house of Roderick Usher. ' The fall of House ' is central of hallucination. Generally story working  around his sister who suffer through the catalepsy. Roderick and narrator both are remain in illusion that she is died and they buries her body in his house but really she is not dead. At the end of terrible story Medline stands besides her brother then both are falling down and Rodrick also dies but his house also remain splits. In the story open all the layers at the end.

4) The Cask of Amontillado:

'The Cask of Amontillado' - You might be thinking, 'Great. I don't even understand the title - how am I supposed to understand this story?' So before we can start exploring Edgar Allan Poe's famous short story, we first need to define a couple of words in his title. Amontillado is a very specific kind of Spanish sherry, sherry being a fortified wine. And a cask is a barrel. So if we put that all together, this story could be called 'The Barrel of Sherry,' but 'The Cask of Amontillado' has a much better ring, don't you think?

5) The Purloined Letter:

It's story creates the mysterious condition and detective story because here create suspense through letter. A letter has been stolen from the boudoir of an unnamed woman by the unscrupulous Minister D—. It is said to contain compromising information. D— was in the room, saw the letter, and switched it for a letter of no importance. He has been blackmailing his victim.( Wikipedia )

6) The Gold Bug:

"The Gold-Bug" is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe published in 1843. The plot follows William Legrand, who was bitten by a gold-colored bug. His servant Jupiter fears that Legrand is going insane and goes to Legrand's friend, an unnamed narrator, who agrees to visit his old friend. Legrand pulls the other two into an adventure after deciphering a secret message that will lead to a buried treasure. ( Wikipedia )

Feedback & Method:-

We attended three days session at Department of English by Dr. Jay Mehta. If I talk about teaching learning method of expert,Scholar and Lecturer of Dr. Jay Mehta Sir, So I have to say with pleasure that He has admirable skill of story telling because when he tells short story at that time We all travels with story and Characters. I felt that I am doing all things same as story's characters. He also explains with examples of personal experiences, Current Issues, Movies and Vivid Psychological theory..etc. I like one point from him that He uses almost gesture and  posture during his lecture which makes class lively and interesting. I learn So many new things from him. There are one of the point is that I improve my vocabulary in the class because he writes each difficult and new words on the board. At the end of the last session We get more knowledge about how to write poem ? because he shares some tips and his poem and we also share there.

Thinking activity on Balaji Rangannathan - post Colonism studies

Teaching of Balaji Rangannathan - Postcolonial Studies

On 19 August  to 21 August we had guest lectures on Postcolonial studies by Balaji Ranganathan. Dilip Barad sir also gave some pre lectures on Post colonial studies before the lectures of Balaji sir.

We have 4 units in Postcolonial Studies:
  1. Black skin white mask
  2. Imaginary Homeland
  3. Orientalism
  4. A Tempest

Sir started the first lecture with the first unit Black skin White mask by Frantz Fanon. This unit is divided in 7 chepters:

  1. The Negro and Language
  2. The woman of Colour and White man
  3. The man of colour and White woman
  4. The so-called dependency complex of the colonized
  5. The lived experience of the Black man
  6. The black man and psychology
  7. The black man and Recognition

In first chapter talked about I ascribed a basic importance to the phenomenon of language. That is why I find it necessary to begin with this subject, which should provide us with one of the elements in the colored man’s comprehension of the dimension of the others. For it is implicate to speak is to exist absolutely for the other. The black man has two dimensions. One with his fellows, the other with the white man. A Negro behaves differently with a white man and with another Negro. The middle class in the Antilles never speak Creole except to their servants. In school the children of Martini que are taught to scorn the dialect. One avoids Creolisms some families completely forbid the use of Creole, and mothers ridicule their children for speaking it. Historically, it must be understood that the Negro wants to speak French because it is the key that can open doors which were still barred to him fifty years ago.

In the second chapter: The woman of color  and the white man devoted to the relations between the woman of color and the European it is our problem to ascertain to what extent authentic love will remain unattainable before one has purged oneself of that feeling of inferiority or that Aldarian exaltation, that overcome pensation, which seem to be the indices of the black weltanschauung. For after all we have a right to be perturbed when we read in je Suis Martiniquaiser. “I should have liked to be married, but to a white man. But a woman of color is never altogether respectable in a white man’s eyes. Even when he loves her. I knew that. This passage which serves in a way as the conclusion of a vast delusion, prods one’s brain. Mayotte loves to a white man to whom she submits in everything. I am white; that is to say that I possess beauty and virtue, which have never been black. I am the color of the daylight. From the first this is how the problem appears to Mayotte-at the fifth year of her age and the third page of her book. Hate is not inborn; it has to be constantly cultivated , to be brought into being, in conflict with more or less recognized guilt complexes. Hate demands existence and he who hates has to show his hate in appropriate actions and behavior; in a sense, he has to become hate. The first has only wants not only to turn white but also to avoid slipping back.

In chapter seven : The Negro and Recognition, man is human only to the extent to which he tries to impose his existence on another man in order to be recognized by him.

  • "An Era of Darkness"

We can see in “An Era of Darkness” Shashi Tharoor gives all the arguments required to established that British colonial rule was terriblel experience for Indians and he does so with a consummate debater’s skill. His book is, in fact, an expanded take on British exploitation of India that famously carried the day for Tharoor in an Oxford debate not too long ago. According to Tharoor, there was nothing redeeming in British rule of our country. What India had to endure under them was  humiliation on a humongous scale and sustained violence of a kind it had never experienced before. In short, British rule was, according to Tharoor, an era of darkness for India, throughout which it suffered several man made famines, wars, racism, deportation of its people to distant lands and economic exploitation on an unprecedented scale. Tharoor even demands a token restitution and public apology from the British for all the harm they had caused India. Tharoor’s debate established and wildly popular in India. Everything the British did in India, Tharoor asserts that it  was for their own benefit and never for that of the Indian.

  •  Ngugi Wa Thiongo's views...

The  language of African literature cannot be discussed meaningfully outside the contacts of those social forces which have made it both an issue demanding our earth our attention and problem calling for a resolution. another word imperialism continues to control the economic politics and culturals of Africa.the struggles of African people to liberate their economy politics and culture from that Euro American based stranglehold to usher a new era of true communal self regulation and self determination. the choice of language and the use to which language is put is Central to a people's definition of themselves in relation to their natural and social environment. Africa is still living was a obviously economic and political despite the claims of Bible wielding diplomats but it was a also cultural. African countries as a colonies came to be defined and to define themselves in terms of language of Europe English speaking, French speaking, or Portuguese speaking, African countries. The title conference of African writers of English expression automatically excluded those who wrote in African language. The discussion on the novel The short story poetry and drama are based on extracts from works in English and hence the excluded the main body of work in Swahili ,Zulu ,yoruba Arabic, amharic and other African language. We have question that "what is African literature?" In Africa in mostly people speak English ,French ,Portuguese was assumed to be the natural language of literary and even political meditation between African people in the same Nation and between Nation in Africa and other continents. “The Language of African Literature,” Ngugi deals with this relationship by returning to the colonial history by which English was substituted for indigenous Kenyan language, and particularly with respect to literature as the title of the chapter suggests. For Ngugi, the detrimental impact of colonization and imperialism extend all the way down to the very language that is used by certain authors. This is the case, says Ngugi, because of the inherent nature of language which carries within itself a whole world of references and values that are specific to the culture from which it originates. And it is for this reason that Ngũgĩwould argue for the revival of literature written in indigenous African languages since the literature of Europe is inseparable from the racist images and stereotypes that perpetuate the false ideology of European superiority over the African continent as a whole.
