Thinking activity on "The waste land" poem

'The waste land' by T. S. Eliot :-

The waste Land is a poem by T.S. Eliot, widely regarded as one of the most alternating narrations, in which vignettes of several characters address those themes experientially. It was published in 1922. It was very complicated poem to read. Eliot has take many references, characters,  languages, scenes and images. Eliot has done use of enjambment.

Poem's structure divided into five sections :-
1. The Burial of the Dead
2. A game of chess
3. The fire sermon
4. Death by water
5. What the Thunder said.

All parts are disjointed. In poem we can see the effect of World war -1, Globalization and Industialization. When poem published, there times critics don't like this poem. But I.A. Richard praises this poem. A very good things about this poem is that we can't understand when one matter was complete and another starts and when it go from one character to other and literature called it ' Enjambment '.

1) What are your views on the following image after reading 'The Waste Land'? Do you think that Eliot is as compared to Nietzche's views? or Has Eliot achieved universality of thought by recalling mytho-historical answer to the contemporary malaise?

Ans :- yes, I agree that Eliot can compared to Nietzche 's views, and Eliot has a historical sense and he try to deal with universal problem of the world with religious way. Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche was a German philosopher, cultural critic, composer, poet, philologist, and Latin and Greek scholar whose work has exerted a profound influence on modern intellectual history. He began his career as a classical philologist before turning to philosophy.Nietzche was a scholar and good in various kind of fields and he gives solutions of the problem.

     2.  Prior to the speech, Gustaf Hellström of the Swedish Academy made these remarks:

T.S. Eliot and S. Freud
What are your views regarding these comments? Is it true that giving free vent to the repressed 'primitive instinct' lead us to happy and satisfied life? or do you agree with Eliot's view that 'salvation of man lies in the preservation of the cultural trad. ition'?

Ans :- According to me, maybe it is true that t giving free vent to the repressed 'primitive instinct' lead us to happy and satisfied life. Because all human beings have their own desire and happiness. It is natural that they fullfil their desire and wish. They can't suppressed from their desire. And I am not agree with Eliot's view that 'salvation of man lies in the preservation of the cultural traition '. Because the spiritual and traditional people like saint they also fulfill their desire on hidden way, and it is a Eliot's point of view we can interpret it. Cultural tradition not control the human disaster or humanbeing.

3) Write about allusions to the Indian thoughts in 'The Waste Land'. (Where, How and Why are the Indian thoughts referred?)
Ans :- Here I found some Indian thought in ' The Waste Land';   in  part no ; 3 The fire sermon  its title which Eliot has taken it from Buddha's. It connected with Buddha. And then Then spoke the thunder

DA
Datta means to give: not only charity but giving oneself for some novel cause
  DA
Dayadhvam means sympathise – empathise yourself with the sorrows and suffering of others

DA
Damyata means Self Control, control over one’s
passions and desires

Datta. Dayadhvam. Damyata.
Shantih shantih shantih

So eliot has taken reference from many languages and from many writer and culture. So it is a mixture of all this thing. Here eliot try to connected this all things and also try to deal with universal idea of world.

Movie screening kya kehna

          Movie screening Kya Kehna in the context of the scarlet letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne

          Priya Sharma wad protagonist of the kya Kehna and in scarlet letter Hester

*Write their story in brief:-

          Hester and Priya were pregnant and they suffer in their life. Hester was very lonely because she lived alone with her baby pearl and Priya was lived with her family and also Ajay's support.

*What is the role played by society in Hester's life?

          Hester was alone and society was blamed her and abusing her. Because she lived without her husband and society asked her who was the father of your baby. And society was tortured her. No one talked with her.

1) Why do you think the director has lifted the character of Ajay to the real state? Is it possible in real life? What are the reasons of your yes or no?

          Yes, maybe it was possible at this time. Some people were very good and they try to happy others. In this movie, Ajay was a very good person and he was truly loved with Priya before Priya's affair with Rahul and Ajay was love with Priya and of the movie, now most of the person accept the others baby for their true love. Ajay was very angry with Priya but he was loved with her that's why he was helped her. And he was supporting her. He knew that Priya was pregnant and society was hatred Priya. But he was not abused her and not hatred her.

          Eg:- In my relatives, someone was truly loved with a lady that lady was already married and also pregnant and he was said I don't care. I want you in my life and also I take care of your baby.

          No matter how you look and your character when you love someone truly.

2) How do you see Hester and Priya as individuals?

          Hester and Priya both were pregnant and society was not accepted them.

          Hester was loved with Arthur but she didn't say anything, other people. She was very lonely and upset. She was pregnant by Arthur. And she suffers a lot in society and no one care and supports her.

          Priya was a college girl and she was affection on Rahul. But Rahul has cheated her and he was said I don't want to marry her but Priya was lucky better than Hester because Priya's family support her and the end of the movie Ajay was proposed her to marry with him and society was accepted Priya's baby.

3) Write a critical not on the end of the movie and the novel why do you think novelist has not given happy ending

          We see that the novel and movie were so much different. And in the movie scarlet letter happy ending and also Kya Kehna. Both were happy with their babies and life partners. In the scarlet letter novel we read, then we realized in the novel they didn't happy ending.

Charlie Chaplin in Modern Times

"Modern Times." A story of industry, of individual enterprise- humanity crusading in the pursuit of happiness.

                today I am watching the charlie Chaplin in modern times movie. this is a very touching movie. we see the comedy, lighter, tells, tragic story.... in this movie we see the 2 characters both are similar. first is charlie Chaplin and second is a girl. they want to a good job, they lost their house and both are a hunger for food. she is a thief because she is filched the food for her family her father & 2 sisters and lost her mother. her father is unemployed that's why he is so much worry.

                charlie is so much funny character. he is working in a company and he is in his free time he is doing his work.he is doesn't want to do it but his hand is not controlled by him. both characters are living together and dream about their dream house. both are searching for the job for their dreams. in full movie, charlie is going in jail again and again and Charlie is don't go outside because he knows that outside life is so much tough and lots of struggle for food... after a long time I am watching this movie and I am so much happy to see. this movie is not only for laugh. this is the real-life connected. in the end, both characters not lose their hope.

The Great Dictator

          As a part of the modern literature, we saw the movie "The Great Dictator" by Charlie Chaplin at the Department of English. we get a lot of enjoyed and learn something new from the movie. the great dictator, American comedy film, released in 1940, that charlie Chaplin both acted and directed. charlie Chaplin was an English comic actor, filmmaker, and composer who rose to fame in the era of silent film. satirizing Adolf Hitler and nazism and condemning antisemitism, it was Chaplin's most successful film at the box office. the great dictator was Chaplin's first feature film with full sound. when the movie was released in 1940, the UnitedStates was still not official at war with Nazi Germany. the movie was a political satire comedy-drama. it was a commercial success movie. the movie also deals with the 1st world war.

How destroyed history?

          charlie Chaplin and Hitler both are born in the same as one country. only different of two days in the time of birth both are similar in height, toothbrush mustache, both are famous also but differences between them were one was laughing in the world and another was crying in the world. here Chaplin tries to criticize Hitler and his system through the comic way. Chaplin tries to the destroyed history of europium country. he was a great director, writer, producer, and actor also.

 What's means of dictator?

According to the oxford dictionary......

          * "someone who rules a country with computer power, has complete control over the armed forces, and destroys any political opposition."

          * "A leader who has complete power in a country and has not been elected the people."

          * " A person who gives order and behaves as if they have complete power."

About the Title of Movie:-

          As a part of the modern literature, we watched a movie of Charlie Chaplin " The Great Dictator." this movie director, producer, writer, starring, actor, music by and producer all had done by only one man by charlie Chaplin. its a difficult task but he has a good ability to arrange all the things. this movie related in 1940 at the network. in this movie. in this movie, Chaplin plays both leading roles as a ruthless fascist dictator and a persecuted Jewish barber also.

Representation

          "The great dictator" movie represented satire on the political system, historically significant & reflection of world war and aesthetically elements. another side that I found feminism also.how a woman and jew people bearing by central power and system. moreover, I found in a movie some condition of the hospital and crash of the plane during that time. here I connected with nowadays times also. mostly nowadays we suffering a lot of problems the same as that time.

Ghetto & Shetto:-

          "ghetto" is an area and market of Jewish people in Europe which hews were permitted to live there. many times ghettos were places of terrible poverty and during periods of population growth. here in the movie, I could find they had narrow streets and small, crowded houses rather than another. same as in nowadays poor, low caste people even villages don't have comfortable houses.shetto is for rich people area.

Justify by people:-

          In the movie, any punishment is given by powerful people. there is no court. during the rules of Hitler has not courted for justify. if you speak against them then they justify. it is not the right way of justification.

Devaluation of Art:-

          Here I can find that both artists were waiting for Hitler for drawing posture and sculpt but Hitler spend a few miniatures them then he goes. so here he doesn't the value of artists and art.as have the time of Hitler at that time they work. we know that art comes from the heart. so here both artists felt boring there. when Hitler passed on the street at that time two sculpt beside the road but he cant saw. both sculpt are symbolically used by Chaplin in the movie.

OD on oneness of literature

Thinking Activity on OD on oneness of literature

Here given task by Dilip Barad sir, so the link is given below

          we find oneness in whole literature. all literature connected with each other, all those which are already written, those being yet to be written. one must have an understanding of this continuity.

T.S.ELIOT'S VIEW

          T.S.Eliot's said in his Tradition and individual talent that the best and the most individual part of poet's work is that reflects maximum influence of writers of past.he also said that no poets, no artist of any art has his complete meaning alone. his appreciation is the application of his relationship with dead poets.

NORTHOP FRYE

           Northop Frye's theory of archetypal criticism is based on the idea that whole of literature has oneness.in the archetypal Criticism Northop Frye talked about seasons. he says that our emotions and feeling are related with season.

'A JOKE' BY ANTON CHEKHOV:

          'A joke' by Anton Chekhov same thing appears. in this story female character time again wishes to go for the sled with his cousin.

          so we can say that some how she feels fear of that act but because of lust see can not deny herself.

          In fact, T.S.Eliot's 'waste land' and Anton Chekhov's short story 'A joke' both has some similarities, which also signifies of oneness.

Modernism & modern poems

Thinking Activity :- identify the modernist symbols 'imagery and metaphors' from the poems

Here given task by Dilip Barad sir, so the link is given below

https://dilipbarad.blogspot.com/2016/06/modernist-poems-activity-identify_25.html

* meaning of modernist:-

          Modernist is a period in literary history which started around the early 1900s. And continued until the early 1940s, modernist writers in general rebelled against clear cut story telling and formulaic verse from the 19th century, instead, many of them told fragmented stories which reflected the fragmented state of society during and after world war I

* some characteristics of modernist

- individual perspective came in the existence
- stream of consciousness seemed
- experiment became necessary
- development of science and politics
- influence of Marxist
- art for life's sake
- loss of faith
- Passion for humanity
- Increased more questions against.

* very short modernist poems

1. The Embankment " by T. S. Hulmes

          T. S. Hulme was influential poet and thinker in twenties century. He revolutionized the way English poetry approached issues of rhyme, meter and imagery. " The embankment" is one of the best known poem.  This poem has completed into 7 lines. In this poem has maybe central thought is lust and falling of man. How any  types of lust leads man towards the decayed. This types of addition became man's life completely weak and dull. So that this types hopeless people prays to god for shelter. It means that here arise question of existence. Here i will add one more thing that in the poem maybe that man wants to decide to die because he doesn't bear himself and maybe he wants to hide himself everywhere.

* Embankment :- Hopeless people
* gold Heels :- Ambition ,prostitution
* Blanket :- Shelter, Hide,

2." Darkness " by Joseph Campbell

          Campbell was Irish poet writing a similar kind of poetry to Hulme at around same time. Poetry doesn't come much more understated than this. This poem has completed into only 4 lines. Darkness also connected with death and something happening bad. Here I can say that speaker will feel depression. As a part of depression speaker face mental illness so that speaker don't like to see shining of stars but likes to see light. So that I have to say that this sky maybe gives the feeling of boghole.here I found some key points like as,

* Darkness :- Depression, death, negativity, evilness, dullness
* Boghole :- which can't sustains the weight because of the softness.
A hole or depression in a land surface having a miry or spongy bottom.
* Silver Ribbon :- Mental illness

3. " Image " by Edward Storer

          Edward Storer was clearly influenced by japanese form such as the haiku ,this poem has completed into only 3 lines also. according to my point of view in the short poem seems like as an image. we cant bind in one certain idea about any image. but her maybe the image of sorrowful condition and everything looks like varnished. i can imagine that situation is became like as land of desert with full moon light. there are somebody on pyre and due to the lake of love an everyone certainly has payed the price.

* moon :- as a land of desert with full moon
*pyre :- bad happening, death, drought, lonelness

4. "In a Station of the Metro"

         pound arrived at this two lines poem after writing a much longer draft which he then cut down, lines by line. the poem describes the sight of the crowd of commuters at the Paris metro station. in the poem using vivid and original image. so that this poem also based on imagination as the title suggested the image of metro-station. there are there are crowded people and everyone rushing. this poem has completed in only 2 lines. in the poem faces are compared with the petal of the black and wet bough. it means that after the rain when branches becomes black. here i found some point like as,

* Apparition :- ghost, imagery
* petals :- flowers, faces
* black and wet bough :- after the rain

5. The pool " by H.D.Hilda Doolittle :-

          H.D. was one of the main practitioners, the short lines poetic movement which pounded in 1912. " the pool" is one of H.D.'s finest short poems about coming face-to-face with her reflection in the waters of rock-pool.here i interpret that speaker has visited the river and pool. pool is symbolically used for joined two shore of the river and rottenness. river is interpret something discovery because  later on he finds something. this poem has completed into 5 lines only.

* sea :- fish :- lover
* net :- marriage , love
* banded :- wings

6. "insouciance " by Richard Aldington :-

          Aldington and H. D. We're husband and wife in the 1910-1920. "Insouciance " is about writing poems in trenches. Aldibgton , like many men of his generation,  saw action at the at the western front during WWI. I think it is poem of soldier because they lives without fear of death.  Title of also suggest that thing but in the dreary trenches soldiers are feel boring. Here used metaphor of doves as a death because one day we all gone as white winged doves. This poem has completed into 5 lines only

* imagination & metaphor :- dreary trenches, flock of death, white winged dove

7. " morning at the window " by T. S. Eliot :-

          This poem written in London, shortly after the outbreak WWI. In the poem context that maybe lurk behind the poem's dark, oppressive images of everyday life. It is an rhymed poem speaker watched terrible sight out side from the window at early morning. He  saw poor condition of his country and people who lived on the pavement. They had not even enough food for eating and another side children played in mud.  They have not good cloth. This poem has completed into 9 lines.

* basement
* trampled edges
* damp soul
* twisted faces
* muddy skirts
* an aimless smile

8. " The Red Wheelbarrow " by William Carlos Williams :-

          It is most  difficult poem for understanding. We can't say properly that this poem about for that. This poem is best example of imagination and metaphor. " The Red wheelbarrow " which used in farming and for transferring something. Here poet try used rural imagery. Here in the poem bird of white chicken comes near for look beauty of wheelbarrow. This poem has completed into 8 lines.

* Red wheelbarrow
* white chicken

9." Anecdotes of the jar" by Wallace Stevens :-

          This poem first time published in 1919. It was one of the best Steven's best-known short poems. It appeared in his first volume off poems and has been baffling critics and readers. This poem has been completed into 12 lines. Here poet has good imagination. I think poet puts jar on the  hill. It was represented progress and beauty of nature.

* jar :- Art,
* Bush :- recreation, wilderness

10. "L" by E.E.Cummings :-

          This poem appeared in 1958 in Cummings ' collection 95 poems,  So it's really a late modernist work. Although it's nine line long, it's only contains four words - cleverly arranged so that ' a leaf falls' appears parenthetically within the word loneliness'. It was creative poem with imagination. In the poem few lines but it's gives the feeling of loneliness. It's good idea about one single leaf fall on the ground which make poem very interesting.

* leaf
* loneliness
