How do I love thee (BA poem)


Sonnet 

Elizabeth Barrett Browning


Elizabeth Barrett Browning was the wife of Robert browning, the famous Victorian poet. During her life time, she was as famous her husband. She wrote a series of 44 poems expressing her love for her husband that is Robert Browning. these series of poems called 'sonnets from the Portuguese' because her husband nicknamed her his 'little Portuguese' on account of her dark complexion. The present poem is one of the sonnets addressed to her husband.

love thee to the depth and breadth and height My soul can reach, when feeling out of
sight For the ends of being and ideal grace. I love thee to the level of every day's Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. I love thee freely, as men strive for right. I love thee purely, as they turn from praise.

The title of the poem is made of a single phrase that the first line of the poem is a rhetorical is a question. The second sentence is in the from of the proposal. The poem begins with the wording of the title the poem tells about the ways in which the poetess loves her husband. She says that she loves him whole - heartedly, deeply and fully. She says that she loves him day and night. She further says that as man strives for their rights, she loves him freely she affirms that her her love is pure devoid of praise. She loves him passionately. The poetess says that she loves him in every walk of life and for all time. The poetess concludes by saying if God wishes she would love him better after death.
